What dates did Marcus Aurelius write his “Meditations”? How long did it take him to write them?
I would also be interested in details such as how many scrolls (or whatever) it required to complete this work. How big were the scrolls, how many words per “page”? Did he use a quill pen? If not, what did he use? Did he dictate to a scribe or are the meditiations in his own handwriting?
Meditations were written over the course of the last 10 years of Marcus Aurelius’ life, so between 170-180 AD, approximately. Since they weren’t meant to be published, but rather were personal musings, there was no standard way in which the Emperor wrote them down. They’ve come down to us in revised translations, not in their original form, so there’s really no way to know how they were originally presented.

We move on to new songs, only for the pattern to repeat itself. The problem is not the song, the problem is Our song. Using the ve |

A Periodic Interview with the King of Terrors $0.99 James Meikle died on the 7th of December, 1799, leaving behind him a name which is better than precious ointment; and a widow and five children, with little on which to depend for future support but the good providence of that God, who, to use his own words, “had guided him through all his wanderings, and supplied him during life to his heart’s content.”The cheerfulness of his disposition continued to the last. Disappointments never soured his temper. Though strict both in his principles and morals, he never appeared sullen or morose; he was rather cheerful, gladsome and merry. There does not appear, for forty years, among all his voluminous papers, notwithstanding the many severe censures which he passes in them upon himself—one expression from which it can be certainly concluded, that he entertained any doubt of his eternal salvation. This, and the constitutional gaiety of his temper, will account for the surprise which many of his most intimate acquaintances have expressed at the perusal of his writings; and explain what otherwise might be deemed paradoxical—that a man uniformly cheerful in company, should in private, make death and the future world the favorite subjects of his meditations. To him death was surrounded with no terrors! The future world captivated his imagination, and filled him, as frequently as he contemplated it—with most exquisite joy. He maintained his reputation for piety, and his unshaken faith in God, to the end. And the God whom he served, honored him with continued usefulness in his station, almost to his last hour. On the first of December, he officiated as an elder in the dispensation of the Lord’s supper. On the second, he wrote a short article in his Monthly Memorial. On the sixth, he was still serving medicines to his patients. On the seventh he was with God!”I will be your God throughout your lifetime—until your hair is white with age. I made you, and I will care for you. I |

A Scientist in the City $19 In his previous books, A Scientist At The Seashore and Meditations At Sunset, James Trefil used commonplace settings in the natural world as a point of departure for probing the mysteries of nature. In A Scientist In The City, Trefil takes the opposite tack, looking at the quintessential man-made environment of the city as a way of examining the forces that define our world. What does the heating system of a building or the construction of a bridge tell us about the development of a city? What does the amplified environmental stress of city life on plants and animals suggest about the wild? How have scientific advances in building materials and an understanding of the structure of the atom helped to shape the cities of today? From an explanation of the evolution and influence of plate glass to reinforced steel to an analysis of the future of the skyscraper, A Scientist In The City offers a fascinating study of the promise and the consequences of technology in our everyday urban lives. In addition, Trefil goes on to explore how the new technologies being developed today will help to determine the changing forms that cities will take in the future. A Scientist In The City is the kind of book that will open our eyes to the man-made world around us, and show us some of the scientific reasons for why we live the way we do. |

Accounted For $1.77 Accounted For is a collection of lyrical poems told by a multi-faceted persona responsible for discovering the meaning of individual integrity, regardless of the apparent self’s impermanent nature. Many poems reveal encounters with other selves, mirrored selves, intimated, drawn, or fully detailed; each revealing a concern for or view into the illusion of time as it plays out in both the personal and social spheres. Prayer, dreams, invocations, meditations suggest relationship with the Unseen that sometimes bestows images that breach our natural world, our natural selves. Occasionally, the speaker will reveal its single self, or even a fractured self as the drama or circumstances in the poems require. The multi-layered or deconstructed self might manage varying perspectives, arrive at a temporary freedom from what binds it, achieve leverage, but when faith in a whole self’s seed is present, she finds by turns, a depth to her vision, openness to a life and death mystery. |

An Elemental Thing $17.95 In a new cycle of linked nonfiction prose-pieces, Eliot Weinberger creates another vortex for the entire universe. ( Boston Review ) If you dream of a jaguar, people are coming. If the jaguar bites you, they are not people. –Eliot Weinberger, from Lacandons Internationally acclaimed as one of the most innovative writers today, Eliot Weinberger has taken the essay into unexplored territories on the borders of poetry and narrative where the only rule, according to the author, is that all the information must be verifiable. With An Elemental Thing, Weinberger turns from his celebrated political chronicles to the timelessness of the subjects of his literary essays. With the wisdom of a literary archaeologist-astronomer-anthropologist-zookeeper, he leads us through histories, fables, and meditations about the ten thousand things in the universe: the wind and the rhinoceros, Catholic saints and people named Chang, the Mandaeans on the Iran-Iraq border and the Kaluli in the mountains of New Guinea. Among the thirty-five essays included are a poetic biography of the prophet Muhammad, which was praised by the London Times for its great beauty and grace, and The Stars, a reverie on what’s up there that has already been translated into Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, and Maori. |

Angel Named Lucy $14.18 When I was a child in New York my mother rescued a stray dog dodging cars in Manhattan. I grew up with that dog. We were inseparable. When she died in 1977 at age eighteen I could not contemplate “replacing her.” However, in 1990 someone called to say she’d found an abandoned dog following the mailman in the rain. She’d named her Lucy and asked if I’d like to adopt her. I said I’d be right over. Out came Lucy, acting like she’d known me forever. Lucy-who looks exactly like my childhood dog. Whose name was Lucky. My best friend returned. Lucy’s presence in my life is a gift from above. She is an incredible friend and teacher. She has shown me the meaning of unqualified love, and, since her blindness, perfect acceptance in the present moment. She has spoken volumes without uttering one word. She embodies simplicity, innocence and magic. Crawling home exhausted from a world full of woe, Lucy has brought tears of laughter, comfort and joy. To many a dog is “just a dog.” An object. It’s hard to fathom those who have not allowed themselves true communion with a pure, loving being. A higher life form, a dog. God spelled backwards. Dogs express what we are here to learn. These are poems and essays about beautiful Lucy, now sixteen, and some of her friends. Poems and essays about the joys and sorrows of life with my now elderly best friend; meditations on the anguish of physical decline, and on coming to terms with mortality. |

Awake Joy $22.95 Encouraged by Eckhart Tolle, Awake Joy is a unique and comprehensive guide to awakening and enlightenment. It points to the radiant joy that is beyond the thinking mind, the separate sense of self, its idea of separation and identification with form. Katie Davis takes the mind-identified reader through their personal growth strategies to awakening. She then deepens to Self-discovery or what we might call the realization of the Heart. The book then shifts to conscious living by embracing humanity’’s diversity and the earth as none other than the Essence. The journey requires presence, not practices, although the book offers experiments and meditations to free the ego. This book is designed to be your companion throughout your life’’s journey to true and lasting fulfillment. It will be a trusted resource again and again. This A-Z handbook stands free of concepts and points pragmatically for those who are ready to surrender suffering for themselves, their families, the schools and the world |

Awakening the Buddha Within $16 Lama Surya Das, the most highly trained American lama in the Tibetan tradition, presents the definitive book on Western Buddhism for the modern-day spiritual seeker. The radical and compelling message of Buddhism tells us that each of us has the wisdom, awareness, love, and power of the Buddha within; yet most of us are too often like sleeping Buddhas. In Awakening the Buddha Within, Surya Das shows how we can awaken to who we really are in order to lead a more compassionate, enlightened, and balanced life. It illuminates the guidelines and key principles embodied in the noble Eight-Fold Path and the traditional Three Enlightenment Trainings common to all schools of Buddhism: Wisdom Training: Developing clear vision, insight, and inner understanding — seeing reality and ourselves as we really are.Ethics Training: Cultivating virtue, self-discipline, and compassion in what we say and do.Meditation Training: Practicing mindfulness, concentration, and awareness of the present moment. With lively stories, meditations, and spiritual practices, Awakening the Buddha Within is an invaluable text for the novice and experienced student of Buddhism alike. |

Barbara Jordan $19.95 Revered by Americans across the political spectrum, Barbara Jordan was the most outspoken moral voice of the American political system, in the words of former President Bill Clinton, who awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1994. Throughout her career as a Texas senator, U.S. congresswoman, and distinguished professor at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs, Barbara Jordan lived by a simple creed: Ethical behavior means being honest, telling the truth, and doing what you said you were going to do. Her strong stand for ethics in government, civil liberties, and democratic values still provides a standard around which the nation can unite in the twenty-first century. This volume brings together several major political speeches that articulate Barbara Jordan’s most deeply held values. They include: Erosion of Civil Liberties, a commencement address delivered at Howard University on May 12, 1974, in which Jordan warned that tyranny in America is possible The Constitutional Basis for Impeachment, Jordan’s ringing defense of the U.S. Constitution before the House Judiciary Committee investigating the Watergate break-in Keynote addresses to the Democratic National Conventions of 1976 and 1992, in which Jordan set forth her vision of the Democratic Party as an advocate for the common good and a catalyst of change Testimony in the U.S. Congress on the confirmation of Supreme Court nominee Robert Bork and on immigration reform Meditations on faith and politics from two National Prayer Breakfasts Acceptance speech for the 1995 Sylvanus Thayer Award presented by the Association of Graduates of the United States Military Academy, in which Jordan challenged themilitary to uphold the values of duty, honor, country Accompanying the speeches, some of which readers can also watch on an enclosed DVD, are context-setting introductions by volume editor Max Sherman. Bodies in Motion and at Rest: On Metaphor and Mortality $0.99 The Barnes & Noble ReviewJuly 2000 The Quick and the Dead According to Thomas Lynch, we have funerals “not because it matters to the dead, but because it matters to the living.” As author, poet, essayist, and possibly the most celebrated funeral director in America, Thomas Lynch should know. It is his job not only to care for the dead but also (and perhaps more dauntingly) to console and accompany the survivors, those who are left to grieve. His meditations on how we regard life and death have earned him a unique place in American letters. A finalist for the National Book Award for The Undertaking, Lynch now gives us Bodies in Motion and at Rest, a new exploration into what he calls the “literary and mortuary arts.” Hailed by The New York Times as “a cross between Garrison Keillor and William Butler Yeats,” Lynch gives us glimpses of ordinary people and the ways they approach their own mortality. In stories about his close friends, and in discussions of sex and death, love and divorce, language and religion, commercial and spiritual consumerism, Lynch guides his readers effortlessly from the womb to the tomb with an inviting brand of wit and good humor, and with more than a few characteristic nods to the great poetry and literature of the ages. Bodies in Motion and at Rest proves Thomas Lynch to be an essential author in a time when contemporary life encumbers us with constant reminders of change and choice, of millennial endings and beginnings. As it steers us through that existential midway between “Something and Nothingness,” this indispensablebookoffers an artful and hopeful reflection on time and its treasures, on love and its power, and on birth, death, and, most importantly, what comes in between. |

Bodies of Resistance: New Phenomenologies of Politics, Agency, and Culture $35.52 This startling volume explores the traumas and possibilities of embodiment as it is lived in a political world. Unveiling the influence of phenomenology, particularly that of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, on contemporary thought, Bodies of Resistance cuts across the disciplines of philosophy, political theory, literature, and cultural studies to explore anew how we are at once produced by and resist cultural norms.Recent theory in the humanities and social sciences has cultivated a sophisticated understanding of the deep structures of cultural forces, how our ways of seeing as well as gesturing, dressing, speaking, and silencing shape a style of being in the world. The essays in this volume add further nuance to this understanding; but, more fundamentally, they address a prior ontological question: What is this being that is styled? And what is this embodied, performing subject that can initiate a resistant encounter with social scripts, whether in prisons, in musical performances, in discourse, or perhaps even in utero? The essays here describe this resistance in creative phenomenological terms so as to extend our conceptions of how agency unfolds from and through the body or bodies. As such, this collection of onto-political meditations will provoke fresh thinking among a wide range of writers and teachers in the social sciences and humanities. |

Book Of The Floating World $1.99 Description Loosely based upon photographs of Occupied Japan, The Book of the Floating World ranges across a war-ravaged landscape, from a shattered Tokyo to scenes of a depleted countryside, with a close examination of the lives constructed out of that ruin. The Book of the Floating World explores the photographed moment-and poetry-as a peculiar and arresting instance of witness. Threaded throughout this collection is a set of interrelated meditations upon history, violence, war, memory, and art itself. What Others Have Said The poems, like their photographs, begin with still objects, with ourselves outside, looking in through time and culture. Suddenly the scenes come alive and we see a surprising compassion and beauty rise up. Each poem holds startling links between the floating samsaric world and a calm inquirer. We are looking at a by-gone Japan; we are looking at our current selves.-John Balaban, author of Locusts at the Edge of Summer: New and Selected Poems and Spring EssenceIf history is the patient work of interpreting those records of the dead that are left to us, Jon Thompson’s searching poems are genuinely historical-acts of listening and looking with a complex, and empathetic, attention. These poems, with their grave cadences and moral clarity, in the end counter the blinding white light of disaster that suffuses them.”-Susan Stewart, author of Columbarium and Poetry and the Fate of the SensesIn The Book of the Floating World, the poet imagines his way into the past, constructing his dead father’s experience of occupation Japan, and at the same time reflecting eloquently on the fallibility of such an endeavor. With his only evidence a group ofphotographs taken by his father, Thompson moves beyond those particular images to summon up vivid fragments of scenes cradled in the narrator’s subtle, intelligent consciousness. The poems are elegant, elegiac meditations on the nature of personal history and mortality. In the book as a |

Calm Things $14.59 The term still life did not come into being until 1650. The French adopted the term nature morte, dead nature, around 1750. The painter de Chirico was said to have preferred the Italian term vita silente. The Japanese, however, call still life, calm things. Calm Things is the title essay of this collection of meditations on what it is like to live with still life, and to live poetically. Both an insider’’s glimpse into the precarious world of artist and poet, and a long gaze at objects and the calm and silence they hold, these essays prize the ordinary, radiant gift of common things. |

Cartographies: Meditations on Travel $0.99 On the impulse behind Cartographies, Marjorie Agosín writes, “I have always wanted to understand the meaning of displacement and the quest or longing for home.” In these lyrical meditations in prose and poetry, Agosín evokes the many places on four continents she has visited or called home. Recording personal and spiritual voyages, the author opens herself to follow the ambiguous, secret map of her memory, which “does not betray.”Agosín’s journey begins in Chile, where she spent her childhood before her family left in the early days of the Pinochet dictatorship. Of Santiago Agosín writes, “Day and night I think about my city. I dream the dream of all exiles.” Agosín also travels to Prague and Vienna, ancestral homes of her grandparents, and to Valparaíso in Chile, which received them as immigrants. Kneeling among the yellow mounds at the Terezin concentration camp, where twenty-two of her relatives died, Agosín places “small stones, shrubs, the stuff of life on graves I did not recognize.”And then on through the Middle East, the Mediterranean, Europe, and the Americas . . . Everywhere, she is drawn to women in whose devotion and creativity she sees a deep vein of hope—from Julia, keeper of the synagogue at Rhodes, to the women potters in the Chilean town of Pomaire.Agosín writes of diaspora, exile, and oppression, yet only to highlight the dignity and valor of those who find refuge in their humanity and their art, in community and tradition. Cartographies shows us what can be found when we journey with openness, as approachable to strangers as we are to ourselves. |

Clean of Heart $17.99 Clean of Heart is written for practicing Catholics who accept all the teachings of the Church, yet are still ensnared by pornography and self-abuse. There is hope! Through the Sacraments, God provides all the grace one needs to become pure. No matter how long one has indulged in pornography or how deep one has sunk into the mire of vice, Our Lord can still break the addiction! What makes Clean of Heart different? First, it is written from a Catholic point-of-view. While Evangelical Christians have many books and programs for pornography addicts, there are few titles on the market for Catholics. Clean of Heart consists of forty-three daily meditations which draw from the power of the Sacraments and the wisdom of the Saints (elements lacking in many Evangelical books). Second, Clean of Heart is a surprisingly chaste book. It contains no obscenities or explicit testimonies which may be an occasion of sin for some. The focus is on attaining a clean heart rather than recalling past sins. |

Clocks We Watch $1.99 Mary Copeland dispels the myth still occasionally surfacing in the shallow waters of the ignorant that domestic life is some sort of refuge from the Big Questions rather than what it is: the very battleground where one engages them. In a language and syntax of stunning grace, vitality, nuance, and evocative power, CopelandÂ-—as mother, daughter, lover, and acute observer of the human dilemma—takes us where the best poetry should, to the heart of the mystery of our own being. B.H. Fairchild, author of The Arrival of the Future, Early Occult Memory Systems of the Lower Midwest and The Art of the LatheClocks We Watch showcases poems shining with luminous craft, imbued with a grace-haunted sensibility, and brimming with the full range and complexity of human emotion. Whether they’re voicing elegies or odes, complaints or meditations, Copeland’s poems feel inevitable—their truths realized through her use of a precise language wedded to necessity and insight. There is a plainspoken grandeur in Mary Copeland’s achievement here, in her ability to plumb the heart’s most profound depths and to reveal with such pathos its myriad mysteries.Maurya Simon, author of The Enchanted Room and Days of Awe, and Speaking in Tongues, and CartographiesThere is a compelling gravity to Mary Copeland’s poems, a weight that pulls us to reflect on our essential humanity and to try and puzzle out a meaning and a metaphysical vision that might lie beyond. All of these important considerations are rendered in accessible and expertly crafted lines and images that arise out of the everyday commerce of our experience. There is a compassion andunderstanding here. This a mature and fully realized collection of great skill and image.Christopher Buckley, poet, professor of creative writing, author of Camino Cielo, Dark Matter, and Blue Autumn |

Cogito?: Descartes and Thinking the World $9 Decartes’ maxim Cogito, Ergo Sum (from his Meditations) is perhaps the most famous philosophical expression ever coined. Joseph Almog is a Descartes analyst whose last book WHAT AM I? focused on the second half of this expression, Sum—who is the "I" who is existing-and-thinking and how does this entity somehow incorporate both body and mind? This volume looks at the first half of the proposition—cogito. Almog calls this the "thinking man’s paradox": how can there be, in the the natural world and as part and parcel of it, a creature that… thinks? Descartes’ proposition declares that such a fact obtains and he maintains that it is self-evident; but as Almog points out, from the point of view of Descartes’ own skepticism, it is far from obvious that there could be a thinking-man. How can it be that a thinking human be both part of the natural world and yet somehow distinct and separate from it? How did "thinking" arise in an otherwise "thoughtless" universe and what does it mean for beings like us to be thinkers? Almog goes back to the Meditations, and using Descartes’ own aposteriori cognitive methodology—his naturalistic, scientific, approach to the study of man—tries to answer the question. |

Compassion $14.95 Compassion in the face of pain, anguish, or unspeakable evil often produces confusion and bewilderment: How can someone endure such unjust suffering with such calm? Wouldn”t it be more natural, and more proper, to not be calm at all? In Compassion, Christina Feldman draws over 30 years of experience as a Buddhist to explain how ordinary people are able to use compassion to overcome negative feelings like tragedy, pain, and terror. Feldman first examines compassion itself, using Buddhist texts and real-life stories to explain precisely what this strange force is, and argues that it is the most precious of all gifts. Feldman then proceeds to show, in six separate chapters, how compassion can be used in the face of adversity, mapping out meditations and strategies that can overcome the dark thoughts that everyone experiences. Compassion is for anyone who has ever felt helpless in our own turbulent, uncertain times. |

Credo: Meditations on the Apostles’ Creed $11.95 In the twelve months before his sudden death, Hans Urs von Balthasar had been writing a series of reflections on the twelve articles of the Apostles’ Creed. These texts, which are undoubtedly among the last things he wrote, take on the character of a legacy, a spiritual testament. For they amount in their extraordinary compactness and depth to a little summa of his theology. What he had set out in detail in numerous book over five decades, he summarizes here in contemplative plainness and simplicity. All the characteristics that make von Balthasar’s work so distinctive and valuable are to be found here; breadth of vision, loveliness of style, and an intuitive-contemporary passion that allows him to pray intellectually and think ‘cordially.’ .In his warm and extensive introduction to the book, Medard Kehl speaks of von Balthasar’s unclouded, almost childlike joy in the richness and beauty of the Mystery of the threefold God, which is evidenced in his interpretation of the creed . |

Crowd Scenes: Movies and Mass Politics $62.06 The movies and the masses erupted on the world stage together. In a few decades around the turn of the twentieth century, millions of persons who rarely could afford a night at the theater and had never voted in an election became regular paying customers at movie palaces and proud members of new political parties. The question of how to represent these new masses fascinated and plagued politicians and filmmakers alike.Movies seemed to speak directly to the masses, via a form of crowd psychology that bypassed individual personality. Many political commentators believed that movies were inherently aligned with the new forms of collectivist mass politics-indeed, government control of the movie industry became a cornerstone of Communist and Fascist regimes, new political movements that embraced the crowd as the basis of social order.Michael Tratner examines the representations of masses-the crowd scenes-in Hollywood films from The Birth of a Nation through such popular love stories as Gone with the Wind, The Sound of Music, and Dr. Zhivago. He then contrasts these with similar scenes in early Soviet and Nazi films. What emerges is a political debate being carried out in filmic style. In both sets of films, the crowd is represented as a seething cauldron of emotions. In Hollywood films, this is depicted as molding private loves, while collectivist movies present it as turning into organized mass movements. Crowd scenes do more than provide backgrounds for stories, that is: they also function as models for the crowd in the theater. The book concludes with an examination of the films of Fritz Lang, who first in pre-Nazi Germany, then in Hollywood, created movies that can be seen as meditations on both these ways of using the crowd. |

Cultivating Compassion: A Buddhist Prespective $54.59 What compels some people to act compassionately without giving it a second thought, while for others it almost seems against their nature? And what will become of our society if compassion dwindles? According to Buddhist thought, compassion is society, and esteemed Buddhist scholar-practitioner Jeffrey Hopkins knows that by learning to live from a more compassionate viewpoint, we can create a better life not only for ourselves but for others. In Cultivating Compassion, Hopkins uses Buddhist meditations (including the Dalai Lama’s favorite), visualizations, and entertaining recollections from his personal journey to guide us in developing an awareness of the capacity for love inside us and in learning to project that love into the world around us. Delivering a potent message with the power to change our relationships and improve the quality of our lives, Cultivating Compassion is the ideal book for an age in which our dealings with each other seem increasingly impersonal-and even violent and aggressive. Anyone seeking release from negative emotions, such as anger, or simply wanting to increase the love and caring among us, will welcome this timely vision for humanity. |

In these brief, incisive essays on life in the opening years of the 21st century, novelist and children’s author Steven Schnur reflects upon what it means to be human in a world fast losing touch with its humanity, discovering even in the midst of terrorism and war countless reasons to celebrate and rejoice. With wry wit, a keen ear for the music of language, and a sharp eye for nature’s inestimable gifts, the author focuses his attentions on the raw material of daily life–the change of seasons, the growth of children, the morning headlines, the imminence of death–artfully awakening his readers to the minor miracles that underlie even the most quotidian events and the powerful feelings they evoke. Dream I Tell You $24 For years, Hélène Cixous has been writing down fragments of her dreams immediately after awaking. In Dream I Tell You, she collects fifty from the past ten years. Cixous’s accounts of her dreamscapes resist standard psychoanalytic interpretations and reflect her lyrical, affecting, and deeply personal style. The dreams, reproduced in what Cixous calls both their “brute and innocent state,” are infused with Cixous’s humor, wit, and sense of playfulness.Dreams have always been a crucial part of Cixous’s writing. They are her archives and it is with them that she writes. As in many of her other texts, Cixous’s mother, father, daughter, and friends populate this work, which offers artistic and provocative meditations on the themes of family, death, and resurrection. Scenes of a daily life-getting a haircut, caring for her child, preparing for work-become beautifully and evocatively skewed in Cixous’s dreams. She also writes of dreams, both amusing and unsettling, in which she spends an evening with Martin Heidegger, has her lunch quietly interrupted by a young lion, flees the Nazis, and tours Auschwitz. The “you” of the title is fellow philosopher and friend Jacques Derrida, to whom these texts are addressed. The book reflects on many of the subjects the two grappled with in their work and in conversation: the deconstruction of psychoanalysis, literary production, subjectivity, sexual difference, and the question of friendship. |

Echoes of an Autobiography $13 From the Foreword by Nadine Gordimer: These pieces are meditations which echo that which was, has been, and is the writer Mahfouz. They are–in the words of the title of one of the prose pieces–’The Dialogue of the Late Afternoon’ of his life. I don’t believe any autobiography, with its inevitable implication of self-presentation, could have matched what we have here. With more than 500,000 copies of his books in print, Naguib Mahfouz has established a following of readers for whom Echoes of an Autobiography provides a unique opportunity to catch an intimate glimpse into the life and mind of this magnificent storyteller. Here, in his first work of nonfiction ever to be published in the United States, Mahfouz considers the myriad perplexities of existence, including preoccupations with old age, death, and life’s transitory nature. A surprising and delightful departure from his bestselling and much-loved fiction, this unusual and thoughtful book is breathtaking evidence of the fact that Naguib Mahfouz is not only a storyteller of the first order ( Vanity Fair), but also a profound thinker of the first order. |
