How much can I get for 1 pound of very small ruby red garnets?
they are nice red, very very very small say a tomato seed size. Where I live I can get many pounds just wondering if i’ll get enough money for my time. thanks for your answers everyone!
There are 5 things you shoudl consider when buying (or, in your case, selling) garnets:
1. Color: The most important information you need when choosing a garnet is the range of colors. Garnets are available in nearly every color of the rainbow except for blue. The most valuable garnets are a strong bright red or raspberry red. They are perfectly clear (no inclusions) and perfectly cut. They are also large (over 3 carats).
Red garnets are not especially rare so quality pieces can be had quite affordably.
Red garnets can go for $15 per carat to cut, but these are the larger ones:
So, (not that I’m a garnet specialist) assuming you have 1 pound of, say, 1 carat (200 milligrams) garnets, this would mean you have ~ 2268 carats of garnets. Most, however, are less than one carat. The values greatly decrease with a decrease in carat size and, most importantly, quality. I don’t mean to get your hopes up but you could have some really special garnets for all I know!
