It is named after the sun dogs (Swedish: Vädersol, “Weather sun”) appearing on the upper right part of the painting. While chiefly noted for being the oldest depiction of Stockholm, it is arguably also the oldest Swedish landscape painting and the oldest depiction of sun dogs. The original painting, which was produced shortly after the event and traditionally attributed to Urban Målare (“Urban Painter”), is lost, and virtually nothing is known about it.

Mrs. Weevely opened the door and greeted her with an unaccustomed warmth. “Well, you can’t guess who is up-stairs waiting for you, Miss Allan,” she announced smilingly. “Oh! Madame Ress, of course,” declared Rosalind with eager delight. Mrs. Weevely shook her head, and the smile vanished. “Somebody a great deal nearer to you than Mrs. Ress,” she replied. Mrs. Weevely never permitted herself to refer to her lodger as “Madame.” She had confided to the cook, after Madam Ress had engaged the room, that she could only hope that the new lodger wouldn’t turn out to be a medium or a fortune teller; the frequent appearance of the Masons’ car at her door reassured her in a measure; and gradually it was borne in upon her that the little elderly woman was a tenant of value. Nevertheless, “Madame” seemed a doubtful substitute for the English title. Rosalind looked at Mrs. Weevely questioningly. “Nearer than Madame?” she repeated in a puzzled tone. “It’s your own aunt! Your mother’s only sister! She says she’s been saving and sacrificing every thing since your mother died, so as to come and make ahome for you. She’s lovely!” and Mrs. Weevely nodded convincingly “And she is in your room this very minute.” And the landlady, with an expectant smile, stood waiting for Rosalind’s expression of surprised happiness. But the girl made no response. She went slowly up the stairs, and

Excerpt: Head in the Clouds is a 2004 drama film written and directed by John Duigan. The original screenplay focuses on the choices young lovers must make as they find themselves surrounded by increasing political unrest in late-1930s Europe. In a prologue, young Gilda Bessé, the daughter of a French aristocrat and an emotionally unstable American mother, reluctantly is told the life line on her palm doesn’t extend past the age of 34 by a fortune teller. Fast forward to a rainy night in 1933, when she stumbles into the room of Guy Malyon, a working-class Irishman who is a first-year student on scholarship at Cambridge University. She has had a lover’s quarrel with one of the dons, and rather than turn her out into the storm, Guy gallantly allows her to spend the night. Later, they become lovers, but the two are separated when Gilda’s mother dies and she opts to leave England. Several years later, Guy sees her as an extra in a Hollywood film, and shortly after he coincidentally receives a letter from her inviting him to visit her in Paris, where she’s working as a photographer. He discovers she is living with the Spanish-born nursing student/model Mia and has a lover, whom she quickly discards when Guy moves in. The trio are enjoying their unusual living arrangement, but world events are beginning to affect their existence. It is the height of the Spanish Civil War, and idealistic Guy, a long-time supporter of the army of the Second Spanish Republic, is determined to do what he can to help them as Francisco Franco’s fascists gain strength. Mia, too, is anxious to come to the aid of her native land. Gilda, however, has no interest in politics or anything else that might disrupt her life of luxury, and pleads with the two to ignore the conflict, but th… More:

Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World was fiction. Victoria Woodhull’s Brave New World was to be terrifyingly real.As the first female Wall Street brokers, Victoria Woodhull and her sister Tennie had reputations to protect. They fretted about Tennie’s well-publicized remark, “Many of the best men in [Wall] Street know my power. Commodore Vanderbilt knows my power.” She had meant her skill as a fortune teller, but the press quite rightly picked up hints the attractive pair traded sexual favors for assistance in their business. To make matters worse, in their magazine the sisters had published articles promoting free love, while distancing themselves from what was said. Taking the offensive, Victoria moved, step by step, until in a speech on November 20, 1871, she boldly proclaimed: “And to those who denounce me for this I reply: ‘Yes, I am a Free Lover. I have an inalienable, constitutional, and natural right to love whom I may, to love as long or as short a period as I can; to change that love every day if I please, and with that right neither you nor any law can frame any right to interfere.’” Having come out of the closet, she had to defend that lifestyle from those who warned that it meant social ruin. In speeches across the country, she championed a new society that, in its nineteenth-century context, was remarkable similar to Huxley’s 1932 classic, Brave New World. Babies were not grown in bottles, but pregnant women were to be treated as “laboring for society,” “paid the highest wages,” and once the baby was weaned, “the fruit of her labor will of right belong to society and she return to her common industrial pursuits.” To critics who warned that free love meant children growing up without parents, she replied that, “not more than one in ten” mothers was competent, and that parents should be replaced by the State because, “It is but one step beyond compulsory education to the complete charge of children.” In her Brave New World, you could have all the sex you

Excerpt: Hussein, an Entertainment is an early work written by Patrick O’Brian (12 December 1914 2 January 2000) and published in 1938 under his birth name, Patrick Russ. The story takes place in India of the British Raj period and concerns the adventures of a young man named Hussein. The novel, called an Entertainment by O’Brian, follows Hussein’s life from birth to his late teens. Though out of print for many years, Hussein was reprinted in the late 1990s under Patrick O’Brian’s name. Kirkus UK stated at that time, this is a book “to read for the fun of the ‘entertainment’ and the light that it throws on the development of one of the great writers of historical fiction.” Born and bred a mahout, Hussein’s adventures often concern elephants. After working as a mahout, teller of tales, snake charmer, leopard handler and spy, he acquires a fortune and marries the woman of his dreams while still in his late teens. Hussein’s mother dies in childbirth, and he is reared in the mahout trade by his father and grandfather. He learns the hathi-tongue, which is the private language mahouts use to bid their elephants, and grows up among a group of mahouts employed of the

Some of them even now, through neglect, are stumbling and falling in the ways of ignorance and crime; some straying, uncared for, into the haunts of vice and misery ; the larger and better portion, let us hope, with fresh hearts and bright faces, timidly, gleefully, hopefully advancing, singly and in groups, to the school-house. Society is waiting, calling—earnestly, anxiously—for men and women of broader culture and nobler nature— men and women of quick intelligence, of enlightened understanding, of large heart and generous impulse, to take these little ones by the hand and lead them into the pleasant ways of wisdom, virtue, usefulness, and happiness. It remains to be seen how many of us will step forward in sympathy with this call of the age, with a ready, a hearty “Ay, ay, sirs !” THE PLACE OF MEMORY IN SCHOOL INSTRUCTION. While the rebel angels were waiting, in the outer abyss, the return of their great leader from his “still hunt” for the whereabout of this new world, Milton represents them as ” reasoning high of Providence, foreknowledge, will, and fate, fixed fate, free-will, foreknowl edge absolute”—a discussion not yet ended, nor has i been restricted to this rebel crew. None so attractive. No supposed possession or attribute has seemed sodesirable, or raised man so near the divine, in the estimation of his fellows, as this foreknowledge, this power to discern the future. It has invested the seer, the prophet, and the soothsayer with a reverence which still casts its mysterious shadow over the otherwise transparent frauds of the modern fortune-teller, and even the prognostics of a Venuer.

Wherein are related divers strange things of Madame Bruce, the ” Mysterious Veiled Lady,” of No. 513 Broome Street. CHAPTER III. MADAME BRUCE, “THE MYSTERIOUS VEILED LADY,” NO. 513 BROOME STREET. The woman who assumes the title of ” The Mysterious Veiled Lady,” is much younger in the Black Art trade than Madame Prewster, and has only been publicly known as a ” Fortune-Teller” for about six years. The mysterious veil is assumed partly for the very mystery’s sake, and partly to hide a countenance which some of her visitors might desire to identify on after occasions. She confines herself more exclusively to telling fortunes than do many of the others, and has never yet made her appearance in a Police Court to answer to an accusation of a grave crime. She has many customers, and might have a respectable account at the bank if she were disposed to commither moneys to the care of those careful institutions. It may he mentioned here, however, as a curious fact, that although all the ” witches ” profess to be able to “tell lucky numbers,” and will at any time give a paying customer the exact figures which they are willing to prophesy will draw the capital prize in any given lottery, their skill invariably fails them when they undertake to do anything in the wheel-of-for- tune way on their own individual behalf. No one of the professional fortune-tellers was ever known to draw a rich prize in a lottery, or to make a particularly lucky ” hit” on a policy number, notwithstanding the fact that most of them make large investments in those uncertain financial speculations. Madame Bruce is no exception to this general rule, and the propinquity of the ” lottery agency ” and the ” policy- shop,” just round the corner, must be accepted in explanation of the fact t…
